The Zorro brand of hot-blooded derring-do returns with The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. This 12-part serial made in 1939 places Don Diego (Reed Hadley) in Mexico. C'est un des grands classiques du cinéma d'aventure qui a les honneurs d'une sortie en DVD. Tourné en 1940 par un cinéaste qui au départ était plus prédisposé à l'intimisme qu'à l'action Le Signe de Zorro reste un des chefs-d'œuvre du film de cape et d'épée à placer aux côtés de Scaramouche ou des Aventures de Robin des bois avec Errol Flynn. Sous la direction de Robert Mamoulian Tyrone Power porte avec charme et grâce le masque et la cape légendaires du bretteur justicier. Face à lui Basil Rathbone suprême en chef d'une garde prétorienne tyrannique joue les méchants de service avec style et délectation. On oscille en permanence entre idylle kitsch entre la belle Linda Darnell (dont une scène de danse) et le portrait d'un super héros sorte de Batman avant l'heure (Zorro apparaît surtout la nuit et disparaît illico sans jamais se faire prendre). Le film s'achève comme il se doit sur un duel (magnifique). Un spectacle familial et bondissant qui saisit toujours par sa fraîcheur et sa modernité. When they say they don't make 'em like they used to, they're talking about 20th Century Fox's exhilarating The Mark of Zorro, starring Tyrone Power as the caped one, Linda Darnell as his love interest, and Basil Rathbone at his scurrilous best as Zorro's nemesis. More textured than the 1920 original with Douglas Fairbanks, this 1940 version has Don Diego/Zorro (Powers) returning from Madrid to defend his father and rally the caballeros (noblemen) against Los Angeles's corrupt new governor (J. Edward Bromberg), intent on taxing the peons to death.

If this all sounds like an Old California redo of the classic Adventures of Robin Hood, that's because it is. Powers has a field day as Don Diego, the fancy clown betrothed to the governor's niece, Lolita (Darnell). Don Diego the effete snob performs silly parlor tricks, peers through pince-nez, and yawns disdainfully at one and all. Power's cowardly alter ego is so believable, his transformation to masked superhero becomes all the more thrilling. Imagine Captain Pasquale's (Rathbone) shock when, in the film's brilliantly choreographed showdown, this annoying fop turns out to be a world-class swordsman.

Director Rouben Mamoulian, known for great period melodramas, does a skillful job of alternating garrison intrigue...
